Top 10 Broadway Musicals for Kids

With so many Broadway musicals to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down which ones are appropriate for children. To help you out, we've put together this list of the top 10 Broadway musicals for kids. We've also mentioned the weeks we're doing many of these musicals.

From kid-friendly adaptations of classics such as Frozen and Annie to fanciful tales like Cinderella and The Little Prince, there's something for every child - young or old - in this list.

Introduce Your Kids to Broadway Musicals

Music, dance, choreography, costumes, sets, acting, and more.

SMC's Broadway musicals summer program is an excellent opportunity to expose your children to experience live theater in an age of Netflix and YouTube.

Your child will learn about people from different backgrounds and get exposure to music, dance, choreography, costumes, sets, acting, and more.

And, of course, being part of a live Broadway musical performance will be a completely different experience than watching a movie or TV show. There's something special about being in the same room as the performers, participating in the show, and interacting with the audience. It's an experience that your child will remember for years to come.

Here are the top ten Broadway musicals your kids are sure to love:

1. Frozen!

Frozen is a Broadway musical fantasy featuring music and lyrics. The show revolves around two princesses, Elsa and Anna, living the tragic loss of their loving parents as they try to lead their kingdom.

On her coronation day, Elsa accidentally traps the kingdom in an eternal winter and builds herself in an ice castle after the stress of hiding her magical powers from everyone becomes too much to bear. It's up to Anna to right the wrong, save their family, and bring back summer.

We're doing Frozen in the first and third weeks of our summer program at SMC (Monday, June 27 - Friday, July 1 and Monday, July 11-Friday, July 15).

2. The Lion King

The best musical for children!

If you're looking for a family-friendly musical that will have your kids singing and dancing along, look no further than The Lion King on Broadway. This show tells the story of Simba, a young lion who must find his place in the world after his father's death.

The Lion King features songs from the original film, like "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and new tunes explicitly written for the stage production.

3. Annie!

Annie is a musical based on the famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan. It tells the story of Annie, an orphan from New York City, who is taken in by America's richest billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

4. The Music Man

The Music Man is a Broadway musical that has been entertaining children for years. The story follows the charming con-man, Harold Hill, as he tries to trick the townspeople of River City into buying instruments and uniforms for a band he hasn't even formed. Though his intentions are initially mischievous, Harold's love for music (and for the lovely Marian Paroo) ends up winning over the heart of the entire town. Kids will love watching this classic musical come to life on stage!

5. Elf

The best live theater is when you feel like you're part of it. That's the feeling that audiences experience at every performance of ELF The Musical. This critically acclaimed show is one of the most inventive and heartwarming musicals to come out in recent years.

In Elf, a young man named Buddy ventures out of his world after crawling into Santa's bag full of gifts and is taken to the North Pole. There, he sees elves in Santa's workshop. But his own large size and imperfect toy-making skills cause him to question his identity. He then travels to NYC with Santa's permission to find his true identity and search for his father.

6. The Little Prince

The Little Prince is a new Broadway musical that tells the story of a young boy who lives on a small planet and his journey to find meaning in life. The show is based on the classic book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It features stunning visuals, catchy songs, and puppetry. It's the perfect show for kids as it has an inspiring and heartwarming story.

7. Aladdin

This Disney musical is based on the story of Aladdin, who is poor and lives in a small shack with his monkey friend Abu. He falls in love with Princess Jasmine, whom he tries to win over by impersonating a prince with the help of a genie previously trapped inside a magic lamp.

The new adaptation of the musical in our summer program will include many of the original songs from the animated version and some new songs. It promises to be an exciting adventure that we're eager to see!

8. Christmas Story

A Christmas Story is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It is based on the 1983 film of the same name directed by Bob Clark.

This veritable theatrical treasure trove features all the precious moments from Ralphie's quest for a Red Ryder BB Gun to his mother's no-nonsense approach to Santa Claus to the triple dog dare that Ralphie takes on the night of December 24th. This musical is sure to be an event your kids won't want to miss.

9.  Cinderella

Cinderella is a classic fairy-tale that was adapted for Broadway in 1957. The musical, which premiered at the New York State Theater on Broadway and starred Julie Andrews, tells the story of a young girl who is left alone in her stepmother's home after her father dies.

After hearing that the prince is hosting a ball, Cinderella decides to go enjoy a night of frivolity as a break from her daily turmoil. But of course, she can't go as herself or she will be recognized! So, with a little help from her animal friends, and a lot of help from her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella is transformed from a maidservant into a beautiful princess. This musical is appropriate for all ages!

Check it out Week 8: Monday, August 15 – Friday, August 19 at SMC.

The next generation attends high school with their classmates—the children of Disney’s heroes. In doing so, they’re faced with a tough choice: should they become good citizens or follow the evil footsteps of their parents?
