Children build important life skills with the study of music

Learning to play an instrument has many rewards but students may not always realize that they can build important life skills with music lessons. It’s not unusual for a child to wonder if all the time and effort put into music lessons is worth it. While they may not always grasp the importance of what they are doing, it’s important to help them connect their hard work with skills that they will carry throughout their life. Three key skills a music student will learn are patience, practice and persistence.

Students learn patience by studying music

One important skill students learn when studying music is patience.

One life skill that all parents will be happy to have their children learn is patience. When a student starts music lessons, they also learn one of life’s most important lessons: that progress doesn’t happen overnight. Progress – and success – take time and the younger a child learns this, the earlier he or she will begin applying this philosophy to other areas of their life like their schoolwork, their relationships and other activities in which they want to excel.

Practicing Music builds the skills to Achieve Goals

Music lessons also teach students that you must practice to achieve results. Practice and consistency is an important life skill when learning music because they will see and hear the results of their practice week after week. This progress will help them understand that you must do the work to get the results you want – there are no shortcuts to true progress. Plus, students who study music have the added accountability of committing to a regular practice schedule with their lessons. Studies have shown that practice is a key factor in achieving goals. In fact, a Brown University study demonstrated that there are benefits to keep practicing for a little while (or “overlearn”) even after you think you can’t get any better.

Persistence is a life skill learned with music lessons

Another critical component to achieving goals is persistence – sticking with something even when it’s hard. When a student is guided through their music lessons week after week, they are also being taught to keep at it and not give up. Some of the most successful people in the world are those who stuck their idea throughout many years of trial and error. This is an important lesson for your child to embrace in today’s world of instant gratification and quick results.

A parent’s decision to enroll their child in music lesson will reap many benefits in addition to the beautiful musical abilities. Check out our post, Your Kid's Brain on Music, illustrating the benefits of music on a child’s brain. At Stage Center Music, we know that building important life skills with music lessons will help a child achieve continued success throughout their life.
