Meet Esteban Godoy: Winchester Stage Music Center Piano Teacher
I am from Asunción, Paraguay. Currently, I am based in Boston, Massachusetts. I am a pianist, composer, improviser, and music teacher. I believe music can serve as a tool to give people an opportunity to develop their personalities, foster their dreams, and providing tools to find and create a way to personal development. I have studied at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz Austria, At the Jam Music Lab private University in Vienna, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Boston, from where I hold a Master's Degree in Jazz and contemporary performance. I have played concerts in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, United States, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and more.
Recently I was awarded the 4th prize of the National Competition of Composition in Asunción,
Paraguay. I also was commission to write a piece in reflection of the global pandemic. The
premiere of this composition was in Paraguay and New York City through the Americas Society.
If you are willing to learn how to play the piano or you are an advanced player who wants to
learn how to improvise or want to learn pop, jazz tunes, or folk songs I would love to work with
you!
My Philosophy
In addition to teaching the technical aspects of learning the instrument, I focus on giving my
students some values that music can give us and help us in our personal growth.
• Do no fear mistakes! In music, there is not such a thing as a mistake, there is not bad
answers. Even though we can always get better, learning to have an awareness of our
playing will give us the maturity and the trust to showcase ourselves and learn that mistakes
are not bad, they are just the beginning of something great!
• Decision-making. We need to dig and found the music that is in our heads. While we try to
find the sound we want we need to decide as there are unlimited options. We just need to
learn to decide how we want the music to sound.
• Be who you are! You will learn that to perform you need to find your voice. What is what
you like? How do you like it?
• Improvise! When you improvise you put it all together. You hear what you play, you take
your decision and you don’t fear mistakes and then you try to engage with other people. On
top of that, you are going to have fun!
• Community! Once you start getting better you realize that music is not something you can
always do alone. You need to perform with others. You will learn that everyone has
something different to say and that we need each other.
• Persevere! One of the most important things to learn is that all of this is not going to
happen from one day to another. We will go through a time where music is boring, where
practicing does not make any sense, where we want to quit. Is there where perseverance
will keep you walking and eventually we will see changes. That was a life lesson for me
and I am looking forward to walking with you and see what you can do with the music.
These are things that I value and I always try to remember.
