Meet Anton Kaliuzhnyi: Stage Music Center Piano Teacher
Anton Kaliuzhnyi, Pianist at Stage Music Center
My name is Anton. I was born in 1988 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. From my childhood I remember the old piano in the corner, lonely gathering dust for a while. I don’t even know where it came from. My mom didn’t know it either, but when she realized that I’m pretty interested (at the age of 5 - 6 I started opening it and randomly banging the keys more often than usual), she offered me to take some lessons.
Even though I was very inspired and showed some skill, we never considered the possibility of me becoming a professional musician, because of the lack of stability in their lives. So after seven years of musical school it remained a silent hobby of mine for a while. Eventually, when I graduated, the future profession was chosen - veterinarian.
In University I started playing the guitar; I played copper baritone in orchestra for two years, and played in a couple rock bands. Every time I was stressed or overwhelmed there has always been a musical instrument as a savior for me.
A couple years later my life brought me to Denmark, where I lived and worked for almost two years. Unfortunately I didn’t have access to the piano, that was the time for me to start playing the pianica. Also I spent my free time digging deeper into the depths of musical theory and improvisation.
Since I moved to the US, I never stopped practicing. I realized that my life isn’t full without the black and white keys in it. Moreover, while my life had been settling through the different jobs in the different states of the US, I’d always been keeping in mind that as a skilled and inspired pianist I could share my skills and inspiration and eventually I got my first students.
The feeling of your student’s professional growth cannot be compared to anything else. The first time I felt it, I remember, I told myself: “That’s it. This is what I want to do. This is the purpose that a job must bring to fulfill you”.
I teach my students that music is a unique language, it connects us no matter what the differences are. Studying how to play an instrument can feel like a long and arduous task, but it is always worth it. Once you get involved in this art, you realize that it expands the boundaries of your soul and you start to see, feel and live with a new perspective, not just a listener but a creator.
